EFF to Open Fraud Case Against Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has announced that it will open a criminal case of fraud against Eastern Cape Premier, Oscar Mabuyane, over allegations relating to his academic qualifications and his enrolment at the University of Fort Hare.
In a statement issued on 24 June 2026, the EFF alleged that Mabuyane fraudulently enrolled for a Master of Administration degree and later attempted to gain admission into a PhD programme under the alleged false representation that he held the required Master's qualification.
The party said it intends to formally open the criminal case at the kuGompo Police Station on Thursday, 25 June 2026. The move marks the latest development in a long-running and highly publicised dispute surrounding the Premier's academic record and qualifications.

The allegations have become a major political battleground between the EFF and the ANC in the Eastern Cape. Mabuyane has consistently denied wrongdoing and has previously taken legal action against EFF leader Julius Malema over similar allegations, arguing that claims of qualification fraud are false, defamatory, and damaging to his reputation.

The EFF, however, maintains that law enforcement authorities should investigate the matter and allow the criminal justice system to determine whether any laws were broken.

As political tensions continue to rise, all eyes will now be on the South African Police Service and whether the case proceeds to a formal investigation. The matter is likely to intensify political debates about accountability, integrity in public office, and the standards expected of elected leaders.
At the time of publication, Premier Mabuyane had repeatedly denied allegations that he fraudulently obtained a Master's degree and has insisted that the accusations against him are without merit.
