Indian billionaire Raj Gupta has secured 500 hectares of land in Nigeria for a groundbreaking industrial development that could redefine steel manufacturing across Africa. The ambitious project, combining one of the continent's largest steel production facilities with a dedicated solar power plant, is expected to become the largest solar-powered steel manufacturing operation in sub-Saharan Africa.

The land was officially allocated by Niger State to Abuja Steel Mills Limited, a subsidiary of the African Industries Group (AIG), marking one of Nigeria's most significant industrial investments in recent years. Beyond the steel plant, the development will also include a modern industrial park designed to attract manufacturing businesses and stimulate economic growth.

At the heart of the project is a commitment to solving one of Africa's biggest industrial challenges—reliable electricity. Rather than depending on Nigeria's often unstable national power grid and expensive diesel generators, the facility will be powered by a massive utility-scale solar energy installation. According to Raj Gupta, the solar project could become not only the largest in Nigeria but also the biggest renewable energy system dedicated to powering a steel manufacturing operation anywhere in West Africa or sub-Saharan Africa.

The investment aligns with the broader industrial vision of Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, who is positioning the state as Nigeria's next major manufacturing and investment corridor. As part of that vision, the governor announced plans to gazette an additional 200,000 hectares of industrial land stretching toward Kaduna State.

The proposed industrial expansion will benefit from strategic infrastructure, including the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline, abundant sunshine for renewable energy generation, and the state's extensive hydroelectric resources from the Kainji, Jebba, Shiroro, and Zungeru dams.

Nigeria's Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, praised African Industries Group for its remarkable growth over the years. What started as a relatively modest steel business has evolved into one of West Africa's largest industrial manufacturers, employing approximately 10,000 people across multiple operations.

Audu noted that investments of this magnitude are crucial to the Federal Government's ambition of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030, with steel production expected to become one of the country's key drivers of industrialisation, infrastructure development, and economic expansion.

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment John Enoh said private-sector investments such as the Abuja Steel Mills project are essential for reducing Nigeria's dependence on imported steel products while creating thousands of new employment opportunities and strengthening local manufacturing capacity.

Founded more than five decades ago, African Industries Group has become one of Nigeria's largest industrial conglomerates, operating more than 30 manufacturing plants across sectors including steel, mining, chemicals, glass, and real estate.

Through Abuja Steel Mills, the company is now expanding into utility-scale renewable energy as it seeks to power heavy industry with cleaner, more reliable electricity. If successful, the project could become a blueprint for energy-intensive industries across Africa, demonstrating that large-scale manufacturing and renewable energy can work together to drive sustainable economic growth.

As African countries increasingly pursue industrialisation while reducing carbon emissions, Raj Gupta's bold investment could mark a defining moment in the continent's transition toward cleaner, more resilient manufacturing.
