AFRICA CANNOT THRIVE BEHIND COLONIAL BORDERS The numbers are telling us something Africa’s political leaders can no longer afford to ignore. By Noko Maleka | InsightJoziNews.org There is something deeply uncomfortable about the way Africa continues to divide itself. A continent that shares history, culture, languages, families, resources and dreams remains separated by borders that often determine where an African may live, work, trade or build a future. Perhaps the most important question we should be asking is not “Where are you from?” It is: “Why should an African need permission to move freely within Africa?” Recent African public-opinion research provides food for thought. Afrobarometer’s African Insights 2026 found that 56% of Africans surveyed believe people in their subregion should be free to cross borders to live and work in other countries.
